¿Incentiva el paro juvenil la escolarización secundaria?

Abstract

In spite of the educational expansion that has taken place in recent decades, in 1996 Spain still had a considerable deficit in secondary schooling, which has prevented our human capital stock from converging towards the EU average (or the OECD average). This article analyses the determinant factors of the decision to continue studying up to the age of 16, in 1981 and in 1991. As predicted by the human capital models, unemployment rates significantly affect the demand for education, while the family revenue is no longer a meaningful factor in 1991. However, it is observed that the effects of unemployment are small, while the educational level of the parents still exerts a very notable influence on the probability of continuing an education after the end of compulsory schooling.
