Abstract

The research described in this article aims to identify the role of Colombian "business leader" as responsable agent within the social, economic and political context. Our main thesis is that business leadership is directly related to the sustainable development of a country, and sustainability levels differ according to the production functions of each of the economic sectors. In other words, sustainable development is a consequence of the exercise of the managerial business leadership . Based on this idea, it will be possible to define styles of "business leadership" according to the degree of orientation respect to the sustainable development. To make this classification, it is firstly necessary to distinguish among several concepts as social responsibility and sustainability. This will permit create a model to determine the extent of the action exerted by business leaders within company and environment, understood as management. From this theoretical and conceptual reflection, there will be a ranking exercise, based on a survey of 252 presidents of the largest companies in Bogota during the first half of 2008
