Investigation of Cocos nucifera as a potential insulator for buildings

Abstract

The recent economic situation in Nigeria has led to the search for new and indigenous building materials which are structurally suitable for buildings as well as possessing potential for energy conservation. Although there seems to be an abundance of wood resources suitable for these purposes, only a few attempts have been made to establish their suitability. The properties of these materials need to be examined and documented. One such material is cocos nucifera (coconut palm) trunk. As part of the effort to develop appropriate building materials in Nigeria, this paper examines and records the thermal properties of coconut palm trunk in order to establish its suitability as a building material, from an energy conservation point of view. Results show that the thermal properties of Cocos nucifera compare favourably with those of wood. In fact, Cocos nucifera is a better heat insulator than most known wood resources. If the material is properly harnessed, it could be used as an efficient heat insulator in various interior spaces.
