Analysis of continuous-flow thin-film solar stills

Abstract

A continuous-flow thin-film solar still is analysed. Both fluid dynamics of the thin-film flow and first law analysis of the system are included. A set of equations describing the spatial and temporal variations of water temperature are established and quasi-analytical solutions are presented. A parametric study is conducted to assess the sensitivity of performance to some major variables. It is found that for small water mass in the storage tank steady periodic conditions are established within 24 h, but for larger masses a second day may be needed. Within the feasible range the pumped flow rate has no significant influence. The enhanced convective heat transfer between the absorbing liner and the water flow is found to improve the productivity over that of a basin still. Tank insulation is a mandatory factor for achieving satisfactory results.
