Abstract

This article presents a process for the design of innovative mechatronic products that integrates techniques of Design Thinking, Concurrent Engineering and Agilism to Intellectual Property Management activities. Design Thinking is employed in the early stages in order to better explore creativity, whereas Concurrent Engineering and Agilism are applied during the development of the product, in order to deal with emerging requirements and shrinking development times. The product development process is accompanied by Intellectual Property Management activities that address the protection of the project's intellectual assets. In this way, the proposed process represents an addition to theory and practice by smoothly integrating the three most influential product design philosophies of today, while, at the same time, introduces a direction for managing intellectual assets throughout the product lifecycle.
