Abstract

All oil and gas fields in the South China and bordering seas are producing from Tertiary strata. Very little prospecting has been conducted on older stratae. The first works of CCOP were oriented towards a better knowledge of the Tertiary, and prompted the development of prospecting activities in the Tertiary. To the northwest and southeast of the South China Sea are areas where production or at least encouraging shows have been noted in older sections. In China as well as in Australia, there is oil and gas production from pre-Tertiary rocks. For the last few years, CCOP has included in its program of work a study of the pre-Tertiary sections of member countries, including those bordering the South China Sea. Field work was initiated by Andre Bonnet, and has been continued by Henri Fontaine. A few samples have been studied in the laboratories of SNEA (P) in Pau (France).
