Abstract

This paper is a review of work on fast reactors in the United Kingdom from the earliest days of civil nuclear power to the present day. It recounts the history of the British fast reactor project including the DFR and PFR reactors and the associated fuel cycle plants, and summarises the major technical achievements in reactor technology, safety, fuel fabrication, fuel performance and reprocessing. It discusses the move to collaboration with the other nations of Western Europe and describes current EFR development activities. It outlines the role of the British Government in directing and funding the fast reactor project, a role that has now been taken over by British Nuclear Fuels plc. Finally it reviews the prospects for fast reactors in the U.K. as part of an optimised nuclear fuel cycle with attractive economics, high safety standards, and low impact on the environment.
