Abstract

We report the results of preheating sawdust and the electrical energy requirements of a briquetting process when using a heated-die screw press. The sawdust was preheated to three different temperatures (100, 115 and 130 °C). For each temperature, briquetting was carried out at three different die temperatures (250, 300 and 350 °C). A significant amount of energy could be saved by densifying sawdust preheated to 300 °C. The energy inputs to the briquetting machine motor, die heaters and the overall system were reduced by 54, 30.6 and 40.2%, respectively. The decrease in the electrical energy requirement per kg of sawdust allows operation of the briquetting machine at higher throughput with the existing motor. Operating the briquetting machine at higher throughput further reduces the electrical energy requirement per kg of sawdust.
