Abstract

High temperature tests were performed in the temperature range 1200 ° to 2600 °C on unirradiated TRISO fuel particles with UO2, UCxOy, UO2 + 2Al2O3 · SiO2, and ZrC kernels. Isothermal annealings were carried out at 1400 ° to 2600 °C. Thermogradient tests were performed at 1200 ° to 2200 °C (ΔT = 200 ° to 1200 ° C/cm). At 2200 °C the integrity of the fuel particles is limited by the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of PyC and SiC coatings, as well as by the thermal dissociation of SiC. At higher temperatures failure is caused by the generation of high pressures within weakened fuel particles. Uranium migration rates from alloyed fuel kernels (UCxOy, UO2 + 2Al2O3 · SiO2) during annealing are higher than from UO2 fuel kernels.
