Abstract

This paper deals with two-dimensional, back-scatter, laser-Doppler anemometer measurements in confined, isothermal, nonreacting, suddenly-expanding swirling air flow. Simultaneous axial and azimuthal, mean and fluctuating velocity measurements were made by using a laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA) system. It is found that the maximum total reverse-flow rate occurs at about 0.50 furnace dia, with 60% of the inlet mass flow recirculated. Some quantitative information, such as the size, shape and intensity of the central recirculation zone, as well as the axial distribution of the energy flux, are provided.
