Identifying the domain of overheating on the energy performance curves of a passive solar house

Abstract

The thermal performance of a house employing direct solar gain is described in terms of the heat requirements and the hours of overheating. An attempt is made to relate these outputs to dimensionless parameters involving window area, thermal mass, resistance value of the thermal envelope, and the local meteorological variables. The results are presented in the form of performance curves. By defining an index known as the passive solar efficiency, the domain describing the performance curves is divided into two regions: a region of no overheating and a region of overheating. An approximate relationship for predicting the boundary separating the two regions is given, which can also be used to determine the technical optimum amount of thermal mass that could be installed in a passive house.
