Air-to-air heat exchangers and the indoor environment

Abstract

Air-to-air heat exchangers were installed in 366 energy-efficient homes as part of a demonstration program in the U.S. The median incremental cost of AAHX was $1268 ($0.69/ft2), and it was less expensive (per square foot) to install this equipment in larger houses than in smaller houses. While most occupants did not notice problems with their AAHX, some households did experience problems related to noise, unpleasant drafts, condensation around the AAHX, and core freezing. Occupants of energy-efficient homes were found to have less problems with their indoor environment (especially mildew/mold and condensation) than a group of control homes.
