The Asian oil market and Singapore as viewed by a major oil company

Abstract

Owing to conservation measures, increased efficiency, and diversification to other forms of energy, the Asian oil market will see relatively poor growth prospects for the rest of the decade. Faced already with excess refining capacity, the Singapore oil industry will have to contend with the growing availability of Middle Eastern source-refined products, some of which will undoubtedly move into the region. There will be further reductions in processing activity to “core” levels sustainable by secondary conversion facilities and marketing strengths. The Singapore oil industry, however, should be able to successfully meet the challenges and survive, aided by political stability, excellent infrastructure, and strategic location.
