Aerodynamics of raindrops and its energy resource implications

Abstract

Working from basic principles of drop-size spectra and Stokes flow, we examine the kinetic energy resource available in raindrops just before they hit the ground. An analytical expression is derived, which is then employed, in conjunction with semiempirical data on the velocities of raindrops, to provide reliable estimates of the amount of this energy resource available at global, continental, national, and local levels. It is found that the energy resource, though diffuse and highly intermittent, is sufficiently large to warrant exploitation, at least on a moderate scale. Suggestions are given on the design of machines for harnessing the energy.
