Energy conservation and resource utilisation in waste-water treatment plants

Abstract

The operation of waste-water treatment plants is to a large extent energy-dependent. This paper examines the energy requirements of these plants and explores ways of conserving energy through electrical and thermal load management and resource recovery and utilisation. The gas produced during the process of anaerobic digestion can be used to drive packaged CHP systems for local heat and power generation. Results from pilot installations indicate that these systems can provide electricity at a lower unit cost than the national grid, giving acceptable pay-back periods.
