Abstract

The dynamic gas sampler/analyzer system is a logging tool that measures the brine methane content of a geopressured aquifer. Brine gas flows continuously into a sampler module located downhole and is transported to the surface for analysis. As formation brine gas flows into the sampler, nitrogen carrier gas flows continuously from a source at the well-head, through a run of impermeable tubing descending downhole and to the sampler connected pneumatically in-line. At the sampler, carrier and sample gas are mixed and flow to the surface through an ascending run of impermeable tubing. At the surface, a small fraction of the carrier/sample gas mixture is diverted to a gas analyzer for analysis of its constituent gases to provide a reading in terms of CH4, CO2 and H2S standard cubic feet per barrel of aquifer brine. A sample transport module, a sampler operating at formation depths and a gas analyzer at the well-head comprise the sampler/analyzer system.
