Fehlende Selbstkontrolle und geringe finanzielle Bildung als Ursachen von Konsumschulden

Abstract

Aktuell machen sich 40 Prozent der Menschen in Deutschland Sorgen um ihre eigene wirtschaftliche Situation. In ernsten finanziellen Schieflagen ist bislang aber nur eine Minderheit. Im Jahr 2020 galten 6,85 Millionen Personen in Deutschland als überschuldet, konnten ihren Zahlungsverpflichtungen also über längere Zeit nicht nachkommen. Diese Zahl weicht nicht signifikant von den Vorjahren ab. Dabei geht jeder zehnte Überschuldungsfall auf problematisches Konsumverhalten zurück – Tendenz steigend. Eine repräsentative Haushaltsbefragung zeigt, dass mangelnde Selbstkontrolle und geringe finanzielle Bildung mit höheren Zahlungsschwierigkeiten bei Konsumentenkrediten verbunden sind. Der kausale Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Größen wird durch ein ökonomisches Experiment bestätigt. Für die Politik ist daher neben einem effektiven Verbraucherschutz bei Konsumentenkrediten eine nationale Strategie zur Finanzbildung hilfreich, da sie die Auswirkungen von geringer Selbstkontrolle abfedern kann.
