Abstract

The term Industry 4.0 has become a widespread buzzword in recent years - frequently used but rarely questioned in its concrete meaning. Particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have difficulties to assess Industry 4.0 and scholars, till now, have not helped with a sound conceptualization. The business model concept enables a systematic and coherent examination of the phenomenon from different perspectives. Therefore, this paper recommends SMEs to use the business model as a means of analysis. For each business model component, the impact of Industry 4.0 is analysed, summarized in a proposition and illustrated with an example. Thereby, the complex influences of Industry 4.0 are presented in a concise way and courses of action become clear.
