Abstract

With the introduction of general tuition fees beginning in the winter semester 2007/08 in Hesse, the first stage of a development that began with the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court on 26 January 2005 has come to an end. The Court ruled that tuition fees are not in contradiction to the German Constitution. Seven German federal states have acted and in line with the majority of countries in Europe have introduced general tuition fees. This contribution gives an overview of the amount of tuition fees and the repayment modalities for student grants in the federal states and in other countries.
