Abstract

While the number of first-year students in Saxony has remained at a constant level, a look at the current figures reveals a decline in the number of first-year students from Saxony. While this gap between first-year students in and from Saxony has so far tended to be compensated by immigration from the other German states, the importance of first-year students from abroad is steadily increasing. Currently, however, the number of foreign first-year students in Saxony is lagging behind the average of the eastern German states. This paper underlines that further efforts are needed to achieve the political goal of a constant number of first-year students in Saxony in the future.
