Abstract

Islamic banks are faced with an ?intense? environment. They have to satisfy ethical and religious requirements and yet achieve a satisfactory financial performance. An intense environment is seen in the literature as a factor of strategic isomorphism. In this paper, we show that despite the Islamic environment significant influence on Islamic banks, the latter do manage a reasonable discretion in strategic choice. The paper describes these banks? situations and reveals through examples their strategic behaviour. The conclusion is that these banks, which are growing very fast, have as much or even more strategic choice than traditional banks.
