Abstract

Inter-firm co-operation has dramatically increased during the 80?s. However, this growth has not led to an analysis of the spatial dimension of this cooperation. Using the conceptual framework of the proximity we aim in this paper to analyse the way firms in the agro-food industry combine both organisational and geographic proximity. We then discuss the consequences of this combination on the development of irreversibility. One of the results of our study lays in the proposition of indicators enabling to better take into account this combination of different natures of proximity. We use the survey ERIE (Enquete Relations Inter Entreprises) which was conducted in France in 2003 and which focuses on the cooperation relationships between firms in the agro-food industry. We conducted several data analysis based on hierarchical cluster analysis. We found two firms profiles : one describes firms that exhibit a low organisational dimension and no geographic proximity in their co-operation, as opposed to the second profile of firms showing both a strong organisational and geographic proximity in their co-operation relationship.
