Abstract

Maximum likelihood and method of moments estimates are developed for rally winning probabilities for certain sports in which points can only be scored by the server (e.g. racquetball, volleyball, squash and badminton). Such estimates are then used to develop a rating system for the players in a tournament, based on Bradley‐Terry paired comparison methods. The procedures are applied to an actual racquetball tournament.
