Abstract

An experiment is described which attempts to define a quantitative methodology for the identification and evaluation of journal publications to be acquired for a specialized collection. In previous acquisition procedures, the subjective opinion of one or more persons has, sometimes idiosyncratically, determined the material available to the user. In an attempt to identify and recommend all possibly relevant periodical titles containing toxicological‐biological information, a statistical decision model that permits an objective approach was designed and employed. A list of yes/no criteria questions was developed with the advice of a “subject‐oriented” Advisory Committee. A training technique was developed in an attempt to assure uniformity in interpretation, and a quality control check was imposed to determine consistency of judgment. The design, implementation, and quality control testing of the model have indicated that the technique has value, but requires individual handling and refinement in the developmental stage.
