Abstract

After the shock of the health crisis in 2020, the performance of French companies clearly improved in 2021: activity picked up, cash balances strengthened, profitability increased, debt remained under control, and companies’ repayment capacity was preserved. These signs of resilience, which can be observed across all company sizes, are valuable assets for facing the current challenges: the war in Ukraine, soaring energy prices, supply chain tensions, recruitment difficulties, etc. However, the positive trend observed in 2021 masks diverse individual situations. For example, only 23% of companies in the accommodation and food services sector returned to a level of activity equal to or greater than their pre-crisis level, compared with 62% for all companies.
