Los orígenes históricos del turista y del turismo en España: La demanda turística en el siglo xix

Abstract

El trabajo ofrece una primera aproximación a la evolución del turismo desde la perspectiva de la demanda en España durante el sigloxix. Pese a la escasez de información estadística, se realiza un primer ensayo acerca del estudio de la figura del turista y sus prácticas turísticas en el Ochocientos a través de la recopilación de información recogida en la prensa y en diferentes publicaciones de la época tales como las guías de turistas. De este modo, se constata que el país se sumó de manera modesta a las tendencias turísticas que iniciaron otros países europeos más avanzados en el proceso de industrialización. El estudio del término turista con sus distintas formulaciones recogidas a lo largo del sigloxix resulta sintomático de las distintas modalidades turísticas que encontrábamos en la península. Primero, viajeros; luego, bañistas, usuarios de baños termales y baños de mar, y por último veraneantes y excursionistas ponen en evidencia la progresión turística del país a pesar de su todavía limitada integración en el flujo turístico internacional.
