Abstract

An outline of the main trends in forest policy is presented, contrasting the available data on woodland area in Catalonia from the 19th century to the present. In some periods the reasons for these laws or regulations, and the ensuing conflicts that arose, are the only available national source to approach the state of Catalan forests. When they are compared with subsequent data on woodland cover, it can be observed that their effectiveness was generally very limited. The information gathered shows a socioecological transition from a long-lasting period of contraction of woodland areas and substantial increases in forestry extractions until the mid-20th century, to another long-lasting one until the present day, where rural abandonment has led to an increase in woodland cover that probably exceeds the initial figures. The pressure over forest resources peaked between the First World War and the years 1940's of Franco's Autarky. KEY Classification-JEL: Q23. Q24. Q28. O13. R52
