Abstract

Un indicateur économique comme le PNB par habitant ne permet qu'une estimation imparfaite de l'évolution des niveaux de vie des populations au XIX[e] siècle. Depuis vingt ans, les historiens économistes utilisent systématiquement les données sur la taille des individus pour évaluer le niveau de vie biologique. Un premier résultat de ces recherches est que les débuts de la Révolution industrielle se sont traduits, à cause de l'urbanisation, par une baisse du niveau de vie biologique, en dépit de la croissance du pouvoir d'achat. L'histoire anthropométrique donne une image plus nuancée des conditions de vie des populations qui ont vécu les changements structurels rapides accompagnant l'industrialisation.
