Die militärstrategische Bedeutung des Südchinesischen Meeres: Überlegungen zum chinesischen Kalkül im Inselstreit

Abstract

Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis ein erneuter Vorfall den Inselstreit im Südchinesischen Meer wieder ins Schlaglicht rückt und die Frage nach Chinas Absichten aufwirft. Beijing wird in dem Konflikt meist Hegemonialstreben unterstellt. Dieser Lesart zufolge versucht China, schrittweise die Kontrolle über das Südchinesische Meer zu gewinnen, um eine nach allgemeiner Überzeugung strategisch bedeutsame Region zu dominieren. Eine Untersuchung der militärischen Dimension des Inselstreits kann dazu dienen, manche dramatisierende Darstellung als fragwürdig zu erweisen. Denn die militär-strategische Bedeutung der umstrittenen Inseln ist bei weitem nicht so groß, wie meist behauptet wird. Außerdem liegt zumindest aus militärischer Sicht die Vermutung nahe, dass Beijing im Südchinesischen Meer eher defensive Ziele verfolgt. (SWP-Aktuell)
