Illegale Fischerei und maritime Sicherheit: Gegen Gefahren in Westafrika auf See und an Land vorgehen

Abstract

Westafrikas Küstenstaaten verlieren durch illegale Fischerei bis zu 1,5 Milliarden US-Dollar jährlich. Zudem treffen die Folgen der Überfischung die Länder hart. Die Europäische Union hat in ihrer Strategie für den Golf von Guinea die Gefahren für die Staaten der Region betont, ebenso wie die Verbindungen zu Europa als Absatzmarkt für Fischereierzeugnisse und Herkunftsregion von Fangschiffen. Bislang standen vor allem Menschenhandel und -schmuggel sowie Piraterie im Mittelpunkt maritimer Sicherheitsstrategien für die Region. Künftig jedoch sollte den Gefahren illegaler Fischerei mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet werden, besonders bei der Beratung sowie Trainings- und Ausstattungshilfe zur besseren Kontrolle von Seegebieten vor Westafrika. Gleichzeitig muss ein vernetzter Ansatz auch die Probleme des Fischereisektors »an Land« einbeziehen. (SWP-Aktuell)
