Rückkehr zur Pockenschutzimpfung? Vom Umgang mit den Gefahren durch biologische Kampfstoffe

Abstract

Das Bundesministerium für Gesundheit erteilte Anfang Oktober 2002 dem PharmaUnternehmen Bavaria Nordic den Auftrag, bis zum Frühjahr 2003 elf Millionen Dosen Pockenimpfstoff zum Preis von 26,8 Millionen Euro herzustellen. Dadurch soll der Impfstoffvorrat in Deutschland auf insgesamt 35 Millionen Dosen aufgestockt werden. Diese Menge würde ausreichen, knapp die Hälfte der Bevölkerung durch Impfungen zu schützen. Langfristig soll jedoch - wie eine Ministeriumssprecherin erklärte - ein Impfstoffvorrat in einer Größenordnung angelegt werden, die es ermöglichen würde, alle Einwohner Deutschlands gegen Pocken zu impfen. Hintergrund dieser Vorhaben sind Befürchtungen, »Schurkenstaaten« wie Irak oder Nordkorea könnten über Pockenviren verfügen. Überdies wäre es möglich, daß Terroristen sich Pockenviren verschaffen.
