Kurden unter Druck: Die Folgen des US‑Truppenabzugs für den PKK-Ableger in Syrien

Abstract

Am 19. Dezember 2018 kündigte US-Präsident Donald Trump an, die mehr als 2000 im Norden und Osten Syriens stationierten US-Truppen innerhalb von 30 Tagen abzuziehen. Der Nationale Sicherheitsberater des Präsidenten, John Bolton, und andere versuchten daraufhin, den Rückzug aufzuschieben und an Bedingungen zu knüpfen. Noch ist deshalb unklar, wann die Amerikaner ihre Soldaten zurückholen, doch dürfte dies noch 2019 geschehen. Trumps Entscheidung hat Folgen insbesondere für die syrisch-kurdischen Volksverteidigungseinheiten (YPG), die gemeinsam mit den US-Truppen die syrischen Regionen östlich des Euphrat vom 'Islamischen Staat' (IS) befreit haben. Die Türkei hat mehrfach angekündigt, militärisch zu intervenieren, um die kurdische Organisation zu zerschlagen. Auch die syrische Regierung hat erklärt, dass sie 'jeden Zentimeter Syriens' zurückgewinnen will. Es droht ein Wettlauf um die Kontrolle über die Kurdengebiete, deren Autonomie damit schon bald ihr Ende finden dürfte.
