Abstract

Die Aussicht auf einen Militärschlag gegen den Irak bringt nicht nur Bewegung in die Entwicklung des Ölpreises. Sie löst auch weitergehende Spekulationen darüber aus, welche Bedeutung die irakischen Ölreserven und Produktionsmöglichkeiten für die Motivation der Amerikaner haben könnte, im Irak einzugreifen. Wenn der irakische Außenminister Naji Sabri die USA anklagt, daß es ihr in Wirklichkeit darum ginge, »den Irak zu zerstören, um das Öl des Nahen Ostens unter Kontrolle zu bekommen«, so spricht er einen Vorwurf aus, der in vielen, auch westlichen Kommentaren mitschwingt. Washington wiederum streitet strikt ab, daß das Öl ein Motiv für die Androhung einer militärischen Intervention im Irak darstelle, nicht aber, daß eine solche Intervention Auswirkungen auf den internationalen Ölmarkt habe.
