Sri Lanka: Neuer Präsident, alte Probleme. Begrenzte Chancen für einen politischen Neuanfang

Abstract

Bei der Präsidentschaftswahl in Sri Lanka am 8. Januar 2015 unterlag der langjährige Amtsinhaber Mahinda Rajapakse überraschend seinem Herausforderer Maithripala Sirisena. Der Machtwechsel hat zwar die Demokratie gestärkt, doch verfügt der neue Präsident nur über wenig Spielraum für einen politischen Neuanfang. Im Vordergrund stehen eine politische Lösung des Tamilenkonflikts und die ausstehende internationale Aufarbeitung der Kriegsverbrechen und Menschenrechtsverletzungen, die auch die Beziehungen zu den westlichen Staaten belastet. Die Parteien, die Sirisena zum Sieg verhalfen, vertreten in diesen Fragen teilweise konträre Interessen. Insofern besteht die Gefahr, dass die innenpolitische Auseinandersetzung in die bekannten konfrontativen Muster der Zeit vor Rajapakse zurückfällt. (SWP-Aktuell)
