The US-armaments industry goes Europe? Der Fall der Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG

Abstract

Am 11. März 2002 schreckte eine Meldung die Rüstungsexperten auf: Der amerikanische Investmentfonds One Equity Partners (OEP) - eine Tochter der Chicagoer Bank One, der fünftgrößten Bank der USA - übernahm 75 Prozent der Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel. Bislang hatte der Schiffbau-Konzern als das Aushängeschild der deutschen Rüstungsindustrie gegolten. In einem Land, in dem andere Rüstungsproduzenten den drohenden Konkurs vor Augen haben, stellte sich die wirtschaftliche Situation des Kieler Konzerns als Erfolgsgeschichte dar. Daß ein so vermögendes Rüstungsunternehmen ans Ausland verkauft werden könnte, galt in der öffentlichen Meinung bislang als unvorstellbar. Entsprechend intensiv wird in Deutschland seither über Hintergründe und Konsequenzen diskutiert. Den jüngsten Anstoß dazu gab die Ankündigung von HDW-Chef Lederer am 14. August, mit dem US-Rüstungskonzern Northrop Grumman eine enge Kooperation im Marineschiffbau einzugehen. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
