Abstract

This is a comment on the article by West et al. (2014) on “Leverage points for improving global food security and the environment”. The authors claim that the leverage points they have identified “offer the best opportunities to improve both global food security and environmental sustainability” (p. 325). However, we criticize that (1) their list of leverage points is far from being complete; (2) they do not evaluate the cost-benefit ratio of the leverage points they propose, and (3) they do not compare the leverage points they propose with regard to their differential efficiency. Therefore, the authors do not provide the kind of information that would be necessary to justify their claim of having identified “the best opportunities to improve both global food security and environmental sustainability”.
