Rasgos de la economía menorquina desde la época británica hasta mediados del siglo XIX

Abstract

Estudio de las etapas por las que pasó la economía menorquina desde principios de la dominación británica hasta mediados del siglo XIX. Se atiende como indicadores del ciclo económico a la evolución del número de buques construidos en el Arsenal de Mahón, al volumen de la flota naval mahonesa y a datos demográficos. La marina mahonesa estaba especializada en el comercio de granos con Levante y en el suministro de trigo a puertos peninsulares como el de Barcelona. Se destaca la grave crisis de este modelo económico a causa del decreto prohihicionista de 1820. Consecuencia de ello serán las emigraciones de mahoneses a Argel después de la conquista francesa y la búsqueda de otro modelo que se inicia en 1849.
