Abstract

This paper describes an interview with Eiji Toyoda, former president and chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, who has been engaged in the company's automobile manufacturing business since its beginning in the 1930s. The interview covers some important topics for the sources and developments of Toyota's international competitiveness and organizational capabilities, including suggestion system, labor relations, relationships with Ford Motor Company, investment decisions for domestic assembly plants, TQC (Total Quality Control), and environmental protection. The interview highlights the critical role of Eiji Toyoda's managerial decisions for Toyota's growth into one of the world's largest auto companies.
