Abstract

The fear of extinction that we identify in the cultural and social products of contemporary world represents the projection of primary affect, which manifests in the case of every human being who lives in this world as a consequence of the triggering of primary anxiety that regards the individual extinction. Thus, we are tributary to the fear and we abreact, sometimes transforming fear into aggressiveness, because the intolerable psychological tension, which is supposed to be determined by the sense of fear itself, endangers the psychological integrity. The solution of transforming the fear into aggressiveness has two main advantages: the abreaction of the primary affect and the achievement of a surplus of psychical energy, which may be used for self-defense. This second advantage grants to any individual the capacity of self-defense, according to the instinct of self-defense possessed by the human race, while, from the social point of view, aggressiveness may become an important power receiver for any personal existence characterized by the harmony between willingness and possibility. The most favorable methods to sublimate the fear into aggressiveness are acquired in the time of childhood, within the relation between mother and baby, and later, within the relation with the primary group. Therefore, aggressiveness should not be considered as being noxious, but an essential ingredient in the human existence, as long as it is acceptable and social productive.
