Abstract

We compute cost of living levels for 11 Brazilian metropolitan regions in the period 1996-2012. We apply the Country Product Dummy (CPD) method to data from the household expenditure surveys of 1996, 2003 and 2009. We calculate the levels for these years, and use data from regional price indexes to interpolate the results for years in-between. The results indicate that Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the most expensive metropolitan areas in Brazil, and there is no important sign of changing this situation in the period. Excluding the three largest cities, the cheapest cities experienced higher cost of living growth, suggesting a process of convergence in cost of living levels. However, this conclusion does not hold when the three largest ones are included.
