Abstract

Since the eighties, French Ph.D. students have the opportunity, after completing their Ph.D., to take a post-doctoral position (commonly referred to as "post-doc"=. A "post-doc" is a temporary research job in a foreign university of firm. Originally these positions were created to encourage international mobility of young researchers. Reasons for doing a post-doc are mainly accumulation of extra human capital, prestige, and discovering how research work is conducted aboad. There is a strong selection to enter a post-doc, but once one has been obtained, it is fairly easy to have it reconducted (or at least to obtain a similar job). So, for Ph.D. who are recruited on a post-doc, the duration of their staying abroad is rather free. We want to show in this paper that, nonetheless, the post-doc duration must be carefully chosen by the youg Ph.D., since it exerts a strong influence on his/her further career course, and especially on his/her possibility to enter the French academic sector.
