Abstract

In many countries, a reversing trend in the evolution of the hired labour force in agriculture was observed : its share in the agricultural employment which had decreased regularly since decades has increased for the last ten years. We propose an analysis of the factors bearing upon the decisions farm households make about the allocation of their labour force between on-farm and off-farm works and the use of permanent hired workers. The study of the changes in the intensity and the impact of these factors between 1988 and 2000 allow to highlight the various mechanisms responsible for the growth of the permanent hired labour force during this period. We show in particular that the substitution between permanent hired work and family work which was perfect in 1988, is only partial in 2000.
