Abstract

In the literature, the tourism has been placed as an activity that propels development, and at the same time generates income and employment, mainly in areas with exotic landscapes and with scarce financial resources. One of the reasons for that is the low relative level of investment required for its implementation, compared with other industries. This study has the objective of evaluate the capacity of investments on the tourism complex to generate employment and income. The analysis is conducted using a tourism input-output matrix constructed for the Brazilian economy by Casimiro Filho (2002) for the year of 1999. The results indicate a high capacity of the sector to generate new jobs and to increase family income. As a result of the above, it is pointed out the importance of implementing policies and programs to promote the development of tourism in the Brazilian economy.
