Abstract

Serbian. English. Socio-economic development, as a complex phenomenon, acquires specific characteristics in multinational, federative communities, such as Yugoslavia. Although nationally non-homogeneous, the republics/provinces asserted themselves as bearers of national sovereignty, with their own economies, while Yugoslavia acquired the characteristics of a confederation. That process ended in fact at the beginning of the 1970s. Contrary to constitutional and legal determinations and political proclamations, differences between republics and provinces are increasing, and regional issues are becoming a subject of dispute, affecting science and other spheres in addition to politics. The paper provides an overview of the development of Serbia within the framework of Yugoslavia in the period 1945-90. In the first part, the basic features of the economic system and economic policy are presented, followed by the main achieved results of the development of Yugoslavia and Serbia. The second part analyzes inter-republic trade flows, which reflect the independence of the republic's economies during the 1970s and 1980s, for which relevant data are available. The last unit is devoted to a comparative analysis of the development of republics and provinces, using standard indicators. At the end, the rankings of the republics and provinces, according to Branislav Ivanović's research, for characteristic years (1961, 1970, 1974 and 1981) are given, based on synthetic indicators, by applying the I-distance to a larger number of indicators.
