Energia nuclear: Uma solução para Portugal?

Abstract

As pessoas receiam a energia nuclear por diversas razões. Foi desenvolvida no contexto de uma guerra mundial, é a base da “destruição mútua garantida”, houve o acidente de Chernobyl e é necessário guardar o combustível utilizado durante vários séculos. Mas Portugal não tem recursos energéticos e precisa de energia para se desenvolver sem aumentar a emissão para a atmosfera de dióxido de carbono. No sentido de informar sobre a solução nuclear, neste trabalho explico a tecnologia e apresento uma avaliação económica de um reactor nuclear de água pressurizada (PWR) que é a tecnologia usada em 2/3 das centrais nucleares dedicadas à produção de electricidade. Resulta da análise que 75% da nossa electricidade poderia ser produzida a um custo de apenas 40% o custo médio actual. Ponderando as vantagens e os inconvenientes, o leitor poderá decidir se fará sentido, ou não, avançar em Portugal com a construção de um central nuclear.
