Abstract

Tại Mỹ, khi văn hoá “publish or perish” (xuất bản hay lụi tàn) đã trở thành chuẩn mực và phổ quát, sức ép xuất bản bài báo còn có phần khắc nghiệt hơn nhiều so với Anh Quốc – nơi Higgs làm việc suốt cả sự nghiệp của ông cũng như so với các nước Châu Âu nói chung. Có thể nói, với việc giáo dục đại học mở rộng theo cấp số nhân, số lượng người làm nghiên cứu tăng nhanh, ngân sách tài trợ hạn hẹp dần từ phía các chính phủ; sức ép phải thương mại hoá, ứng dụng hoá các tri thức khoa học càng nhanh càng tốt từ phía thị trường, số lượng bải báo xuất bản đã trở thành “phong vũ biểu” đánh giá chất lượng của nhà khoa học cũng là điều dễ hiểu.
