Abstract

This is a draft Act of Parliament, the Democratic Society Act 2020, aimed at democratising the economy, and therefore creating a democratic society for the 21st century. This follows the recommendations of the Institute for Employment Rights, Rolling out the Manifesto for Labour Law (2018). The preamble states it is: "An Act to extend the principle of democracy into every field of economic life, by ensuring everyone has votes at work, in their capital, in public services, and to expand common wealth among every member of society." It would build upon existing rights at work, in pension funds, and in public services to give everyone the right to take part in the institutions that they contribute to: through work, through capital, and as members of the public.
