Administrative Reforms in Local Governance for Tribal Development in I ndia

Abstract

Tribals in India present a significant degree of cultural and ethnic diversity. They differ in their socio-economic levels and behavioural patterns. Moreover, Tribal situation in country poses particular problems of development, not encountered in other areas.In the last decade Govt. of India became more aware about Tribal Development and especially Tribal's participation in Local Governance and their Social & Economical development. The Panchayats Extension to the Scheduled Areas (PESA), Act-1996 has further increased the representation of tribals and tribal women are also being given more powers in the Panchayat and ‘Gram Sabha'. The object of this paper is to analyze Tribals' development through Local Governance after reservation given to them through such Constitutional Amendments, and to illustrate modified functioning of Tribal Panchayat after PESA, Act
