Diversidad y diversificación en 85 áreas económicas locales de Argentina (1998 a 2014)

Abstract

La diversificación productiva ha sido señalada como una forma de promover el cambio estructural regional, incentivar la realización de actividades más dinámicas o más complejas, generar externalidades positivas y disminuir la vulnerabilidad de los territorios. Este trabajo constituye un primer aporte para analizar el grado de diversidad productiva y su evolución en todo el territorio argentino, a partir de datos de empleo registrado en 85 Áreas Económicas Locales (AEL) entre 1998 y 2014. Los resultados indican que, desde una perspectiva nacional y regional, la estructura económica a transita desde 1998 un proceso que tiende a la especialización productiva, es decir, a la concentración del empleo en un menor número de actividades. Del análisis a nivel de AEL se desprende la existencia de dos procesos de carácter acumulativo: uno en el cual las AEL de menor tamaño e inicialmente muy especializadas se diversifican a lo largo del período, y otro en el cual las AEL de mayor tamaño y mayor diversidad inicial tienden a especializarse. Adicionalmente, se verifica que las áreas especializadas en comercio y servicios, en actividades extractivas o en turismo, se diversifican significativamente menos que las agroindustriales, ceteris paribus.
