This paper presents a new approach to the description of household size distributions. It has been found that a Poisson distribution can be used to approximate the observed household size distribution in terms of a single parameter, namely the average household size, where empty habitable dwellings are counted as size zero households. The approach adopted in this paper is expressed in terms of the family life cycle.
